Chisels for rotary hammers and breakers

Chiselling starts with the right shank. SDS-Plus belongs with the lighter rotary hammers and is meant for tile, plaster and service chases, SDS-Max with the heavy breakers that clear concrete, screed and masonry. A chisel with the wrong shank simply does not fit, and a light machine with a heavy chisel delivers vibration rather than impact. Then choose the shape to suit the job.

A point chisel concentrates all the impact energy on one spot and opens concrete up. A flat chisel widens the breakout and follows a line. A spade or wide chisel takes off surface and is the choice for lifting screed and tile adhesive. An angled tile chisel keeps the hand out of the working face and leaves the substrate intact. Lengths run from around 250 mm up to 400 mm for deep breaking, with cutting widths from 20 to 80 mm.

Always work with a sharp edge, because a rounded chisel turns impact energy into heat. Check the head as well: a mushroomed striking face damages the hammer mechanism over time. For planing and finishing timber, look at planer blade.
